Reign
Reign, which airs on the CW network, is by far my new favorite show. As of now, there are only three seasons on Netflix and I watched them all religiously. The show centers around real life rulers who lived during the 16th century. The main character of the show is Mary Queen of Scotts, and the show focuses on her relations with Catherine de' Medici, Queen Elizabeth I and King Francis. The show is highly fictionalized, however certain events hold true, such as King Francis being known as weak and sickly, and the fact that him and Mary were never able to bore any children. The show has everything that any girl needs to become hooked, romance, passion, death, and even in some cases humor.
I cannot even choose a favorite character from the show because they all differ so completely, Mary is a purely genuine person, but the power of being queen does in some ways corrupt her, she mentally abandons Scotland as her home country and in her own mind belongs in France. Mary chooses her love for Francis over her obligations as a ruler. Catherine on the other hand, is purely evil and would power over love and compassion in a heartbeat, yet Catherine is a character that is so hard to hate. She provides the show with humor and a sense of mystery because you can never really know what she is up to. I feel the same about Elizabeth, in season three Elizabeth becomes one of my favorite characters of the show. Her secret relationship with Dudley, a man who would never be of high enough standing to marry a queen fascinates me. Elizabeth went through trauma with the execution of her mother and lives her life almost in complete isolation and is constantly demeaned for being a female monarch. Elizabeth takes part in some undesirable events, but her passion still makes watchers cling to her character.
My only complaint of the show is that I wish that every character on the show existed in real life, because I love researching characters and comparing their real life presence to their presence on the show. Some characters, such as Lord Narciss, I will look up just to find out that they did not exist, so their role in the show was purely fictional.
The fourth season of Reign is set to Premiere on February 10th of this year, so once it is released onto Netflix I will do a follow up blog post pertaining entirely to the new season.
